
Washington County, VA (January 13, 2026) – A fatal traffic accident occurred early Monday morning on Interstate 81 in Washington County when an SUV struck a disabled tractor-trailer. The crash happened in the northbound lanes near mile marker 31 shortly after 6:00 a.m., according to Virginia State Police. The tractor-trailer had reportedly stopped in the right travel lane when the SUV collided with the rear of the trailer.
Emergency units arrived promptly and began assessing the scene. Despite their efforts, the SUV driver sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. No additional injuries have been reported. Authorities have not disclosed the identity of the deceased, pending notification of next of kin. Initial reports indicate that investigators are looking into why the tractor-trailer was stationary and whether proper warning indicators, such as hazard lights or reflective triangles, were deployed at the time.
Traffic along I-81 northbound was disrupted for several hours while law enforcement officers and crash reconstruction teams conducted their investigation and cleared the roadway.
