Virginia Beach, VA (December 18, 2025) – Investigators have confirmed that drug impairment was a factor in a deadly two-vehicle collision that occurred on Indian River Road in late August, resulting in the death of a Virginia Beach woman. Authorities released their findings on December 13 after completing a months-long investigation.
The crash happened at around 6:40 p.m. on August 27 in the 4700 block of Indian River Rd. Police responded promptly to the scene, where they discovered two vehicles with extensive damage. Tragically, 50-year-old Claire Hurt was pronounced dead at the scene. Preliminary findings indicated that Hurt’s vehicle, while traveling southbound, veered from its lane and was struck by a vehicle heading north. The other driver remained on-site and fully cooperated with law enforcement.
Toxicology results later revealed the presence of THC, the primary psychoactive component in cannabis, in Hurt’s system. Although no criminal charges have been brought forward, the confirmation of impairment has sparked renewed warnings from public safety officials. Virginia Beach Police Chief Paul W. Neudigate emphasized the risks associated with driving under the influence of any substance, stating that even minimal intoxication can significantly hinder reaction time and judgment.
This fatal crash reflects a growing concern across the state regarding drug-impaired driving. Law enforcement agencies continue to see a rise in incidents involving cannabis, prescription drugs, and alcohol. Officials urge all drivers to make responsible choices and stay off the roads if impaired in any way.
