Alleghany County, VA (January 15, 2026) – A fatal single-vehicle accident on Tuesday morning on Interstate 64 claimed the life of a 91-year-old Covington man in Alleghany County, according to information released by Virginia State Police. The crash was reported at approximately 11:16 a.m. along the eastbound lanes of I-64 near the 1.1-mile marker, an area that sees steady highway traffic throughout the day. Authorities confirmed the incident involved only one vehicle.
Preliminary findings indicate that a 2017 Subaru Crosstrek was traveling east when it unexpectedly lost control. The vehicle crossed the grassy median separating the lanes of travel and entered the westbound side of the interstate before striking a guardrail. The force of the impact caused significant damage to the vehicle and prompted an immediate emergency response. Investigators have not yet identified what caused the driver to lose control prior to crossing the median.
The driver was identified as Billy Jack Camden, age 91, of Covington. State police confirmed that Mr. Camden was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. He was transported from the scene to Lewis Gale Alleghany Hospital for medical treatment. Despite efforts by medical staff, Mr. Camden later succumbed to his injuries. No other vehicles were reported to be involved in the crash, and no additional injuries were reported.
Traffic in the area experienced temporary disruptions as authorities worked to document the scene and remove the damaged vehicle. Virginia State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, including whether medical issues, road conditions, or other factors may have contributed. Additional information may be released as the investigation progresses.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Billy Jack Camden during this difficult time.
